Catching the Buzz - Part 1 of 2

On the Internet, no one is looking for your book (unless you’re already an international bestseller.)  But they are looking for something. What?  And does it in anyway relate to your book? Here is one good free place to start looking for answers.

Yahoo’s Buzz Index let’s you see the most popular keywords / phrases that are being entered in the Yahoo search engine (You can check it out here.) It shows the overall ranking plus a “heat index” of sorts that lets you see what terms have made the biggest increases in usage recently.  It has built-in analysis categories for movies, actors, sports, TV, etc. but nothing for books.  However,   if you click here, I found a way to filter their feeds so that you can see the posts they tagged as Books. If you click here, you can also filter by Literature. These links are not the raw ranking data they show for sports and TV entries but they do contain some numbers and plenty of commentary on book related searches.

How would you use this data? Suppose that you saw a link between your book and one of the entries in the Buzz Index. Why not write something about that at your website and see if your traffic increases? Of course, you have to have your integrity in check.  If you have a book about personal finances and then write about Britney Spears and there’s no link at all between the two, then you’re both dishonest and wasting your time. Plus, search engines will eventually punish you for such behavior so it’s not a good long term strategy.

Next post: I’ll take a look at Google’s entry in this space.
