Love books? Got a blog? Get a free book.

The Lace Reader will be on bookstore shelves Sept. 1.  There’s been so much positive buzz about the book that some people simply can’t wait to read it.  Unfortunately, we only have a limited supply of ARCs (Advance Reader Copies) available.  Fortunately, we did budget a good portion of the ARCs for bloggers so if you love books [...]

Every time I think I’m done posting, they pull me back in

I guess I’m having a Chris Anderson day.
I blogged earlier today about his post on online PR.  And then a few seconds ago, I noticed that www.BookExpoCast.com has posted the MP3 for his recent BookExpo America session. From their website:
Chris Anderson is Editor-in-Chief of WIRED, author of The Long Tail, and co-founder of the new website BookTour.com. [...]

PR 2.0

Everyone in book publishing knows that PR and publicity are important for book sales.  As I mentioned previously, if you are interested in selling books today, you must understand how online social media are changing the very PR ground underneath all us (read Brian Solis’ manifesto here.)
Embedded in Brian’s manifesto is a link to a post by Chris [...]

A Plug for a Plug-In

I have no financial interest in Sherry Boschert’s book, Plug-In Hybrids, but I do think the issue of alternative energy is the central one that our generation needs to address.  From my hobbyist-level understanding of the new technologies that can release us from the stranglehold that the gasoline-powered internal combustion engine places on us (politically, financially, and [...]

Set your DVRs for Stun

Just saw that CSPAN2 (aka www.BookTV.org) is airing a few BookExpo America 2007 seminars and panels.  Go to the website and Search for “2007 Bookexpo America” to see what’s playing when.
The popular Breakfast Panel with Stephen Colbert, Khaled Hossini, and Lisa See will air on June 16th at 11:30 PM and again on Sunday, June 17th [...]

Amazon.com is not just a river in denial

The AP reports that Jeff Bezos says Amazon will sell 1,000,000 copies of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” but with such steep discounts that he won’t make any money on it.  He also said that his $79 a year Amazon Prime “free shipping” drains the company of $600 million a year. (You can read the article here.)
Why [...]

Keywords are not key and Search is dead

If you think having the right Google search keywords is the secret to successful online marketing, I urge you to read this excellent article from Brian Solis titled ”The Future of Communications - A Manifesto for Integrating Social Media into Marketing.” Read it if you want to market books online or anything else for that matter.  This is essential [...]

7 Ways to Save Harry Potter

Not that he couldn’t live on royalties alone.
Inc Magazine has an interesting article on what can be done to keep the brand equity of the book series alive after there are no more new books to sell.  Excellent exercise in thinking “beyond the book” so that you can create additional revenue. See if you can [...]

Happy Holidays!

Just a reminder that while you’re out mowing your lawn and firing up the barbecue, it’s that holiday time of year again.  Regional trade-shows and holiday catalog reservations have to be made immediately.  The trade shows take place in Sept. and Oct., holiday catalogs go out in Nov. but reservations are taken now so if marketing to [...]

Harry Potter not so magical after all

Unless you count disappearing margins as a wonderful trick.
I just read a Reuters article on the massive discounts (40-50% off the $34.99 list) that Amazon, B&N, etc. are granting for the final Harry Potter book (”…and the Deathly Hallows”) due out in July.  To paraphrase Yogi Berra, that book is selling so many copies, no [...]
