Naming the FREE! book

This much we know, Chris Anderson’s follow up to his bestselling business book, The Long Tail, is going to be called FREE. What the subtitle will be is uncertain. Back in May, Chris invited readers to pick a subtitle from a short list he had compiled. And while they were good, none of them struck me as good enough.

So yesterday, I posted a comment and offered my own alternative:

FREE! How Nothing Changes Everything

If you want to see the other entries, add your own idea, or vote on names, you can click here and you’ll be taken to the FREE book naming page on Chris’s site. Scroll down to the bottom and you can add your comments if you are so inclined.

To be honest, Chris is so popular that he could name his next book just about anything and it would sell quite well but it’s still educational for all of us to take a peek at the book naming process. I’m hoping that Chris will share some of the decision making process as he whittles down the choices.

Remember, the cover and the title are the two most important marketing tools you have in a bookstore that directly influence your sales. They make people pick up your book.  At that point, the back cover and the first few inside pages take over.  But if no one picks it up your book, you’ll never sell any.

For more ideas on naming books, you can read my post from early June here.
