Giving it away for FREE!

The only way to make money in a Web 2.0 world is to give stuff away for free. We’ve all known that for a while now.

The secret is knowing what, when, and how much how much of your content to give away for free. Why? The reason is simple. Too many other people are providing exactly what you provide.  OK, that might not be technically true because your stuff is “so much better” than everyone else’s but most vistiors to your site don’t know that. And they certainly won’t buy anything from you when they don’t trust you and the quality of your content / product / service.  Wait, forget about buy something? They won’t even register at your site. Unless the bait is really tasty. So give a free nibble to build trust, get an email address for a delicious snack, and then sit down and break bread together.

To delve deeper into this idea, I recommend Chris The Long Tail Anderson’s MP3 at www.BookExpoCast.com titled:  Giving it Away: Free Lunch or Unrealized Opportunity. You can download it for FREE! here.  BTW, Chris’s follow up to his bestselling book The Long Tail is called FREE (read his post about it here.)

At the same site is a session titled Publishing in the MySpace Era with Bruce Chizen, CEO of Adobe. It is NOT really about MySpace (in fact, there’s only a brief reference to MySpace.) You’ll also find a healthy serving of Adobe product promotion mixed in but there’s a lot of very useful information about how new technologies will impact the delivery of content. And stop the presses, here’s the big news: Paper books aren’t going away anytime soon. You can download it FREE! here.

P.S. Bloggers can get a FREE! ARC of our new fiction title The Lace Reader. Just click here.
